제 7 호 This Fall, Do Not Fall
Kicker: EDITORIAL This Fall, Do Not Fall By Sarah Chae, Editor-in-Chief sarah3fran1@naver.com Chaotic times are slowly passing by. Post-corona seems to be around the corner. Summer has already come to an end. How have you been? Some may feel anxious and worry about how to make their second semester of 2020 meaningful. Staying at home might have been fun at first. The thrill of getting up late in the morning was unforgettable. Making dalgona coffee and not going to school sure was interesting. However, as social distancing periods were extended again and again, most of us have run out of ideas of what to do in order to stay strong. Therefore, today, I am going to talk about what we can do to get through this semester without falling down. If you are depressed, reach out for help! If you are having trouble in taking online classes and finishing assignments on time, you are not alone. Keeping up with school work and studies is not easy at all, especially when you are worn out and depressed. Going back and giving up is impossible, and going down might look like the easiest way to get through this semester. Some are saying that this is the chance to do something, but you might be to blue, sick, and tired. If you need help, reach out to the contacts I mentioned in the previous edition’s editorial. (Take a look at ‘How to stay strong in disasters’: https://www.smu.ac.kr/eng-newspaper/editorial.do?mode=view&articleNo=709781&article.offset=0&articleLimit=10#/list ). + If you need help with collecting information and doing research in school assignments, take a look at our previous edition’s cover story. There is information about websites you can browse. (https://www.smu.ac.kr/eng-newspaper/coverstory.do?mode=view&articleNo=707330#/list ) Achieve small missions! (with friends and family) The best way to not fall is by making achievements. The word ‘achievement’ might feel like a burden, but I am not talking about something like going on an adventure to find a fortune right now. Just give yourself a small mission that you can feel good about. Make a simple checklist that has at least three easy tasks and one challenging mission. It will feel nice when you finish the easy missions, and you will feel even better when you finish the challenging one! You can take on this quest on your own, or you can do it with a partner. Talking about these missions with friends and family is a good way to motivate each other. You can make a new hobby or habit in this process, and this will also help with getting through these tough times. This fall, please do not fall down. You will get through these tough times, and I am sure at the end of it you will think it was worth it. Sarah Chae, Editor-in-chief
제 6 호 The Middle of Somewhere
Kicker: EDITORIAL The Middle of Somewhere By Sarah Chae, Editor-in-Chief sarah3fran1@naver.com Disasters have always been by our side. This time though, it was closer than most of us could bear. Whatever we are thinking, though, the first semester is coming to an end. We are now in the middle of 2020. After the start of the COVID-19, we have experienced many new starts. I know that some people say that this will be a valuable experience. However, this whole self-isolation, buying masks, social distancing, and unfamiliar teaching methods are just making some of us feel like we are in the middle of nowhere. Wherever you are right now, first of all, I want to say: Good work coming all the way here. Tough times have made some of us get weak mentally and physically. The piles of homework and the fact that we have to be careful every moment in the day did not help us feel any better. How are we going to get through this, and when will this all end? How did you come all the way here? Maybe you cooked some stuff you never thought you would ever cook. My sister is making cute looking cookies from YouTube and I have started listening to music every day from an idol group called ‘OH MY GIRL.’ Taking pictures of cats in the parking lot helped a lot, too. I saved entertainment expenses because I could not go outside, and I used some of it to support medical staff and donate money to people in need. It sure is not easy to maintain daily life, but we are all trying our own ways. The Ministry of Health and Welfare said that in order to stay strong, you need to accept the changes in your daily life and keep yourselves healthy. Yoga, meditation, and fun indoor activities are great for this. Make frequent video calls and online contacts with close friends and family to share your feelings. If you need more help, ask experts for some advice. Here are some ways to ask for help. Everyone can get lost in times like this, but thankfully, everyone can get help too. If you need help, do not forget the contacts above! I hope you can find your way to a healthy, happy, and hopeful somewhere. See you in the middle of somewhere. The SM Herald will always be there for you. Sarah Chae, Editor-in-chief Sources: National Center for Disaster Trauma http://pf.kakao.com/_lKgbxb , https://nct.go.kr
제 5 호 Spring Into A New Year, New Semester
Kicker: EDITORIAL Spring Into A New Year, New Semester By Sarah Chae, Editor-in-Chief sarah3fran1@naver.com Spring gives us a feeling of blooming flowers, love, and a start of something. For example, this is the start for me as the new Editor-in-Chief of the SM Herald. Some of us are taking the first step into Sangmyung University. The rest of us are probably sad or worried because the semester is starting again. The SM Herald is taking some new steps too. In the previous edition’s cover story, we did a check-up on improvements and what needs to be fixed. From now on, the SM Herald has accepted those opinions and is trying our best to write articles that are interesting as well as helpful. We are planning to open an event & information booth if circumstances allow us. Most importantly, in April to May we are going to look for students to work with us, so if you are interested, don’t forget to look out for our recruitment info poster on campus and on our SNS accounts (Everytime, Instagram). The opening of the first semester of 2020 has been postponed. No thanks to the COVID-19, 20% of 2020 has already gone by. What did you do during the extra time? Maybe you made the famous arm-aching ‘Dalgona Coffee’. Did you stay at home and accept the challenge to buy masks that get sold out in seconds on the internet? You might have spent a great time at the movies. Whatever is happening, while on the other side, you might have worried that you might spread the virus yourself. Some of us might feel depressed or anxious by these series of unbelievable events. I cannot say that I am not anxious too. Everything was postponed, delayed, put back… I am worried because I know that time will not wait for us to catch up with everything again. Early blooming flowers might make us feel like we are falling back. However, I believe this unexpected experience has given us a time to spring into 2020 in a new way. I believe that you and me, since we are humans and not flowers, will find a way to spring forward and spend a great year again. Sarah Chae, Editor-in-Chief
제 4 호 One Step for a Better Start
Kicker: EDITORIAL One Step for a Better Start by Eun-ji Lee, Editor-in-chief dmswl716@naver.com We prepared a COVER STORY about performance evaluation of The SM Herald webzine. Our Editors who will lead The SM Herald checked the improvements compared with the past when we published The SM Herald as a paper magazine. They also analyzed what needs to be modified to publish a webzine that is more helpful to students. Some articles in SOCIETY, ENTERTAINMENT, and WORLD were written by members who will leave The SM Herald next year. Leaving memories of The SM Herald behind, the feeling of writing the final articles must have been really heavy. I am also sad because the memories from being a Cub-reporter to becoming Editor-in-chief are so precious. However, I believe all the remaining members will lead The SM Herald in a better way, so I was able to write the last EDITORIAL with a comfortable mind. Lastly, I want to express my appreciation to the members who have been trying to make The SM Herald more useful. Eun-ji Lee, Editor-in-chief
제 3 호 Come Out of a Slump With Us!
Kicker: EDITORIAL Come Out of a Slump With Us! by Eun-ji Lee, Editor-in-chief dmswl716@naver.com Isn’t it really hard to adapt to campus life? Many students often fall into a slump after spending a two-month vacation. To keep an irregular life-style may have worn students out. Regardless of the reason, I think that students cannot concentrate on studying in September after summer vacation. When you fall into the slump, it will be a great method for you to recive help from others. We prepared a COVER STORY about useful programs and lots of events scheduled during the second semester. Therefore, you do not have to agonize alone to get out from the slump. In addition, new reporters of The SM Herald are going to deal with various subjects such as SOCIETY, SCIENCE, and WORLD in this issue. William Shakespeare said that, “To climb steep hills requires a slow pace at first.” Likewise, you need to slow down and steadily go forward to your goal to overcome the slump. The SM Herald will support you by giving the information focusing on your needs. Eun-ji Lee, Editor-in-chief
제 2 호 How about Your First Semester?
Kicker: EDITORIAL How about Your First Semester? by Eun-ji Lee, Editor-in-Chief dmswl716@naver.com We have finished half of the year. How about your first semester? Maybe you are satisfied or unsatisfied with your last semester. Whatever the result, I would like to say for you that everything is going to turn out to be okay. The early bird catches the worm. It is nice to reflect on the past but preparation for the future is essential to reap contently. The SM Herald hopes for you to be an early bird and receive help from us. Therefore, we prepared a COVER STORY that introduces practical mobile applications for students and vacation programs being implemented at Sangmyung University. It will be a good chance for you to know the social welfare for students in the SOCIETY category. And also, in this issue, you can access the first articles of cub-reporters in the SM News category and get various kind of information from that. Steve Jobs said that the dots marked by you will somehow connect in your future. We want you to mark the meaningful dots that link between you and your successful future by using the information from our articles. Eun-ji Lee, Editor-in-Chief
제 1 호 New Start in the New Year
New Start in the New Year by Eun-ji Lee, Editor-in-Chief dmswl716@naver.com Welcome to the web magazine, SM Herald. SM Herald opened the online homepage after a long preparation period so we could meet you with a new format. Unlike the format of a traditional paper magazine, we will write varied news both inside and outside of the college through fixed kickers such as SOCIETY, ENTERTAINMENT, LIFE, etc. COVER STORY will mainly contain the articles that are related with our college. For example, the first COVER STORY is based on a survey of students. The story of students will be directly reflected in this category. We are a little bit worried because we have never tried online publishing before. However, it is an important element to communicate with readers in the connected society. Thus, the SM Herald will not miss the requirements of readers from the comments in the YOUR VOICE category. Sooner or later students will be able to meet the SM Herald at offline booths, and on social networking services. And also various events will be readied for readers because we are always agonizing about the methods of public relations to inform our webzine. Thank you for always giving us lots of your attention and love. Eun-ji Lee, Editor-in-Chief
